A presidential commission will be created to defend human rights

President Porfirio Lobo Sosa confirmed yesterday that he will create a presidential committee for human rights that will have the participation of all the civil organizations that defend these principles.

This presidential announcement coincides with rumors that the international community is requesting a change of the National Commissioner of Human Rights, Ramón Custodio López, because he supported the coup d'etat against president Manuel Zelaya Rosales and absolved the military of all responsibility for killing protestors.

Lobo explained that he will "name a special committee to deal with the theme of human rights, because I am interested in having a committee directly related to the presidential office that oversees compliance with respect for human rights here in Honduras."

He justified the pronouncement by referencing doubts that exist about the politics of security "and I want to be sure that [such insecurity] is not coming from any state organism; in my heart, my compromise with my people is an unconditional support for human rights."

He mentioned that in the decade of the 1980s he was a representative of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CODEH) in his department and in that period that meant to risk one's life, and thus now that he is President of the Republic he will be even more dedicated to the cause.

Lobo noted that to this end he invited human rights defenders to the presidential house, but no one came; nonetheless, he will invite them again.

If they don't come, "I will seek out distinguished individuals with high credibility here in Honduras, so they may create a special committee reporting directly to the president that will oversee unconditional support for human rights," the president stated.

Crearán comisionado presidencial de defensa de derechos humanos

El presidente Porfirio Lobo Sosa confirmó ayer que creará un comisionado presidencial de derechos humanos que tendrá participación de todas las organizaciones civiles que defienden estos principios.

Este anuncio del mandatario coincide con rumores en el sentido de que la comunidad internacional está pidiendo el cambio del Comisionado Nacional de los Derechos Humanos, Ramón Custodio López, porque apoyó el golpe de Estado contra el presidente Manuel Zelaya Rosales y eximió a los militares por el asesinato de manifestantes.

Lobo explicó que va a “nombrar un comisionado especial sobre el tema de derechos humanos, porque me interesa que de parte de la Presidencia directamente podamos tener un comisionado que vigile el cumplimiento del respeto a los derechos humanos aquí en Honduras”.

Justificó el nombramiento en algunas dudas que hay sobre las políticas de seguridad “y yo quiero estar seguro que no va de parte de ningún organismo del Estado; en mi corazón, mi compromiso con mi pueblo es un respeto irrestricto a los derechos humanos”.

Recordó que en la década de los 80 él fue representante del Comité para la Defensa de los Derechos Humanos en Honduras (Codeh) en su departamento y en esa época eso significaba arriesgar la vida, de manera que ahora que es Presidente de la República con más razón está comprometido con esa causa.

Lobo informó que para este cometido la semana pasada invitó a los defensores de derechos humanos a la Casa de Gobierno, pero nadie asistió, sin embargo, los invitará de nuevo.

Si no van, “buscaré personalidades distinguidas aquí en Honduras, de alta credibilidad para que hagan una comisión especial directamente de la Presidencia de la República que vigile por el respeto irrestricto de los derechos humanos”, expresó el mandatario.
